It’s entertaining to watch a two-hour documentary that manages to confirm every comment ever made about the ludicrous hype, dodgy deals, and murky swindles of the contemporary art market—and then to show that the reality is even more shamelessly corrupt than we outsiders imagined...

Every now and then, factual television will throw up a story that takes your breath away, drops your jaw and, while it’s at it, grinds all your gears. The Great Art Fraud (BBC Two) is such a programme…

                     FINANCIAL TIMES

The Great Art Fraud, an extensive and riveting documentary… combines crime and high farce, and makes for a rollicking ride

This two-part BBC Two documentary series traces the rise and fall of art dealer Inigo Philbrick, from his modest start at White Cube to running successful galleries in London and Miami while living a lavish, high-flying lifestyle. Set in the boom years between the financial crisis and Covid, the series probes the excess of a speculative art market, where works by artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat became financial assets. Behind the glamour, Philbrick secretly sells the same artworks to multiple buyers in multimillion-pound scams, and as his scheme unravels, the series follows his fall from celebrated dealer to fugitive in an international manhunt.
